It’s not funny!! It’s a sad reality. (white privilege)
But I’m not completely convinced it is. There must be alternate reasons, there are laws against discrimination so if a company hires someone who is Caucasian over someone of another ethnicity there must be some reason they at least say so as not to appear to be discriminating. Now is that reason completely false (in which case it is discrimination) or is there some merit to it?
I think the whole thing behind privilege is that two people – one white, one ethnic – could be stuck in the exact same situation but privilege allows better opportunities through institutionalised advantages given to white people. How are you ever actually going to pin discrimination on a company for not hiring you, they’re not going to go around saying “hey you didn’t get the job cause we chose the white dude.”
Well you could devise a test say by having a white person and an ethnic person with the exact same qualifications applying for the same job over a range of fields over a period of time and if they went into interviews they were to have relatively set answers and demeanours. After say 100 applications you could feasibly devise if there was any discrimination overall.
I don’t think there needs to be a test when it’s a pretty well-known truth. It’s like asking to prove sexism by getting a male and a female with the exact same qualifications to apply for the same job over a range of fields over a period of time then testing to see what the results are after 100 applications.
